Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the Minnesota - Canadian Border - May 2002
This is Julie and Jordan at the start-off point at Little John Lake.
About 6 miles, 3 lakes and 2 portages later, we came to this portage in Canada.  The lake in the background is Fowl Lake.  The land on the left is Canada and the land on the right is the US.  Up to this point we hadn't seen any snow.
After a short portage of 140 rods, which is less than half a mile, and a rise in elevation of only 50 feet, we came to Moose Lake and this is what we saw:
We couldn't believe it.  We had been told that we may see some ice flows but this entire lake, as far as we could see, was frozen.  The ice was about 4 inches thick!  We may have been able to get our canoe into the water here but there was no way that we could see to traverse the lake.
To commemorate the occasion, we made a snowman paddling a canoe and turned back, to come out the same way that we went in.  While portaging back to Fowl Lake it hailed on us.
We camped on Fowl Lake that night before heading out the next day. That night it snowed.  We returned home the next day.
