Woods Trail in Porcupine Lake Wilderness -
June 2002 |
 |
| This
trail is known for its wildlife and primitiveness. Hikers
sometimes see wolves. It is remarkable, however, for its mosquitoes
and beavers. The trail is periodically erased by beaver
ponds and traverses over beaver dams are often necessary. At
times the mosquitoes were so bad that they would cover our head
nets. When we would open up our water bottles mosquitoes
would be left floating in the water. We learned to drink
through our head nets so that they would strain out the
mosquitoes. We ate while jogging so that we could lift up
our head nets without getting eaten. What a miserable
night. We left the tent at home to save weight and the
mosquitoes buzzed around our heads all night. |
