North Woods Trail  in Porcupine Lake Wilderness - June 2002
This trail is known for its wildlife and primitiveness.  Hikers sometimes see wolves.  It is remarkable, however, for its mosquitoes and beavers.  The trail is periodically erased by beaver ponds and traverses over beaver dams are often necessary.  At times the mosquitoes were so bad that they would cover our head nets.  When we would open up our water bottles mosquitoes would be left floating in the water.  We learned to drink through our head nets so that they would strain out the mosquitoes.  We ate while jogging so that we could lift up our head nets without getting eaten.  What a miserable night.  We left the tent at home to save weight and the mosquitoes buzzed around our heads all night.
This is a series of beaver dams. Beneath water level under a beaver pond. Where we finally found a place to cross.
Jordan on beaver dam. Beaver ponds
On the left is Jordan with his bug netting.  On the right is a beaver that swam within 10 feet of us.
Kettle Moraine - May 2002
These were taken from our campsite. Julie is 7 months pregnant in this picture.  We hiked 15 miles the first day.  What a tough babe!
