Backpacking in Porcupine Mountain State Park - June 2004
Porcupine Mountains State Park is a wilderness area on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  It is a fantastic place with miles of trails, open backcountry camping and a small collection of rustic, backcountry cabins.
The first night we car camped at a site right on Lake Superior.  The pictures on the left are some pictures just a few yards from our site.  The waves on the lack were surprisingly big.  Forester, when left alone would charge right in to them.
The next day we did a bit of sightseeing before setting out backpacking.  We found from the visitor's center that the park has backcountry cabins and that one was still available.  We rented it and hiked about 3 miles in to it.
The cabin was great!  It was completely secluded on a little lake.  There was no plumbing or running water, just a little wood burning stove inside, a bunk bed and a small table.  During the night Forester fell off his bunk.  We found him sleeping under the bunk bed right on the dirty floor.  We usually would just sleep in a tent but the cabin was a welcome change.  The black flies and mosquitoes were so bad that they covered our head nets.
The best part of the cabin, however, was the canoe and canoeing equipment that was provided.  We paddled around the lake a couple of times and explored some small streams feeding in to it.  We saw two bald eagles.  The only mishap was when I almost capsized the canoe quickly reaching for Forester's shoe that he threw overboard.  Luckily it floated long enough that we could turn around and go pick it up.  We never did find his sock....
